Prior to the upcoming season, Liverpool is interested in acquiring the top player in the Championship.
Many players who excel in the Championship have made significant moves to the Premier League and performed just as well there as they did in Englandâs top division throughout the years.
Liverpool is all too familiar with this, having acquired Andy Robertson from Hull City in 2017 following 42 appearances in the second division for the Tigers.
James Madison is arguably the best example from the recent past. The midfielder for Spurs played for Norwich City in the Championship for two seasons; his second season was especially good. For the Canaries, Maddison racked up 14 goals and eight assists, earning him a significant transfer to Leicester City in 2018.
Aside from Maddison, other players who have spent time in lower leagues include Jack Grealish at Aston Villa and Mason Mount on loan at Derby County. This has helped to greatly boost their careers.
There is a ton of fascinating talent in the Championship right now, some of whom could go on to achieve great things in the Premier League and follow in Maddisonâs footsteps.
But one guy in particular is dominating the second tier this season, and a lot of fans think heâs the best player in the Championship right now.
Liverpool is aiming for the Championship winner.
The player in question is Crycensio Summerville, a winger for Leeds United who is enjoying an incredible season thus far. With 39 games played, the Netherlands U21 international has 17 goals and 8 assists, helping Leeds battle for automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
Nevertheless, regardless of whether Leeds are promoted, itâs possible that the winger is destined to play football at a higher level the next season.
Summerville is reportedly attracting interest from a few Premier League teams in the summer, with Football Transfers reporting that Liverpool is particularly interested in the winger. The Elland Road team is asking a hefty price for the 21-year-old, and the Reds may make a ÂŁ45 million offer for him.
Ruben Amoirm of Sporting, who is now the favorite to fill the vacant Anfield head coach position, may want to bring Summerville into the team if Liverpool names him their next manager.
Victor Gyokeres, who Amorim brought to Sporting from Championship Coventry last summer, may choose to shop in the second tier once more.
Football players Summerville and Gyokeres are completely different from one another; Summerville is a speedy, straight winger who Ben Mattinson on X refers to as a âone-vs-one monster.â Summerville is Amorimâs next EFL endeavor.
Mattinson, however, calls Sporting striker Gyokeres a âpowerhouse.â A typical center-forward, the Swede excels at hold-up play and is clinical in front of goal.
However, where they are similar is in their reputation of being the best player in the Championship. Summervilleâs goal involvements in the second tier this season currently sit at 25 in 39 games. Last season, Gyokeres scored 21 goals and registered ten assists for Coventry, but couldnât quite drag them up to the Premier League.
Should Amorim join Liverpool, we could well see him look to bring Summerville in, as his latest EFL project signing. The Dutchman, however, would cost almost double what Sporting paid for Gyokeres, with LeÔes splashing £20m on the centre forward.
It is certainly easy to see how Summerville would fit into Amorimâs favoured 3-4-3 system. Whilst on paper, Summerville may be a winger, Amorim likes his wide men to act as number 10s with the ball. The 22-year-old is not much dissimilar to Sportingâs right-winger, Marcus Edwards, who is also a great ball carrier and an explosive dribbler in one-on-one situations.
Fbref reports that this season, Edwards has averaged 4.73 progressive carries per ninety minutes, ranking him in the top 10%, while Summerville has averaged 5.08 progressive carries per ninety minutes, ranking him in the top 6%.
They also carry the ball into the penalty area at a relatively similar rate per ninety minutes. Summerville averages 2.53, placing him in the top 4%, and Edwards averages 2.26, placing him in the top 6%. Both players are excellent dribblers, but Summerville has more goals and assists this season in Liga Portugal than Edwards, who only has four goals and four assists.
It is easy to see how Summerville could fit into Amroimâs system if both end up moving to Liverpool next season. It would certainly be an exciting signing for the Reds, and they could have a ready-made Amorim-style winger who the Portuguese manager can turn into his next EFL success story.
