Bruno Fernandes was sent off in the first half against Spurs
Following consecutive draws with FC Twente and Crystal Palace, supporters were hoping that United would turn things around against Spurs.
But everything went wrong at Old Trafford very fast. Spurs’ lead increased to 3-0 after Fernandes was sent off, compounding the early goal by Brennan Johnson.
And here is we rated the Manchester United stars.
Andre Onana – 5
Stood his ground to deliver a good save from Timo Werner who was clean through – no chance for either goal.
Noussair Mazraoui – 5
First in the refs’ book for chopping down Destiny Udogie. Could also have blocked Micky van de Ven for the goal. Just watched Solanke make it 3-0.
Matthijs de Ligt – 4
Unbelievable first half. Failed to cut out the cross from Micky van de Ven which led to the first goal.
Lisandro Martinez – 5
Slipped on the halfway line in the buildup to Spurs’ second goal. Booked for a wild challenge on Maddison. Can be such a good defender but he was erratic here.
Diogo Dalot – 5
Gave the ball away in dangerous areas and nowhere to be seen as the man he should have been marking, Johnson, opened the scoring. Never got a handle on the Spurs winger.
Manuel Ugarte – 5
Suffered a stinker and was lucky to last until the 73rd minute. Tried to track Maddison with limited success. Booked for a late challenge on Kulusevski. His game is all-action with his tackling and running but he struggled here, so limited was his support. Subbed for Christian Eriksen.
Kobbie Mainoo – 5
Struggled with Spurs’ press before he was substituted after Fernandes’ red card. Not one of his better performances and was taken off just before half-time following Fernandes’ sending-off, possibly with injury.
Marcus Rashford – 5
Way off the pace. Terrible giveaway led to Spurs’ opener and summed up his day. Seems to lack the motivation to track back and press, and also seems short of the kind of confidence required to make an impact. Tough to watch.
Bruno Fernandes – 4
Arguably the worst captain in United’s history. Some lovely passing but let his team down with an ugly lunge on Maddison that saw him deservedly sent off.
Alejandro Garnacho – 6
Had United’s only chance in the first half but hit the outside of the post. Improved in the second half. Always willing to track back. Hit the post in the first half with a back-post volley. One of the few United players with some urgency to his play.
Joshua Zirkzee – 5
Looked completely lost up front – threatening to be another poor Erik ten Hag signing. Denied by a great Vicario save in the first half. It was his only meaningful touch, as he was replaced by Casemiro at half-time.
Subs:
Mount (for Mainoo 45) 5, Casemiro (for Zirkzee 46) 7, Hojlund (for Rashford 73) 5, Eriksen (for Ugarte 73) 5.
