According to rumours in Italy, Liverpool has joined Arsenal, Inter Milan, and Juventus in the competition to sign Jonathan David, a forward for Lille who has less than a year left on his contract.
InterLive reports that the Reds have entered the race to recruit the prolific attacker and may shortly provide him with a five-year contract costing a total of £20.8 million in salaries, allowing them to sign him for free the following summer.
David is expected to go for a new challenge, therefore Inter seems to be the front-runners to sign him in 2025. A renewal with Lille is now improbable.
During the last transfer window, David was strongly linked to a summer move from Ligue 1, although he was not given much interest by elite clubs in Europe.
The Lille striker said he is “open to everything” ahead of his French contract expiration and is not necessarily prioritising a move to the Premier League in a recent interview with The Athletic.
The Brooklyn-born star enjoyed a fantastic season in Ligue 1, making 47 appearances across all competitions and tallying 26 goals and nine assists.
David is “readying an offer” to join Liverpool at Anfield.
The Canadian striker, David, has been referred to as “one of the best strikers in the world” and has appeared to be maintaining his excellent form into the new season. His strong efforts have helped Lille qualify for the Champions League for the first time in three years.
In 11 games this season in all competitions, the 24-year-old has already contributed four goals and two assists, including four in the Champions League qualifying round.
Any elite Premier League team’s front line might benefit greatly from David’s eye for goal, especially Liverpool, who have had a strong start to life under Arne Slot and are currently atop the standings after six rounds of play.
David’s exit from Lille was confirmed by club president Olivier Letang in June, who also said the Canadian international was open to leaving the team.
