Manchester United hit rock bottom again – this time they managed to let slip a 2-0 lead in the Europa League match against Porto.
How did they do it? That’s a question Erik ten Hag certainly won’t answer. Well, God bless him. We’ll see for ourselves.
While it was yet another collective team failure, Matthijs De Ligt was found to be culpable in all three instances where Porto scored.
For the first one, De Ligt was out of position and paid the price.
A few seconds before Porto’s second goal, Matthijs lost possession of the ball at a crucial stage and failed to recover in time.
The third goal is the most telling. First, Lisandro Martinez failed and De Ligt could not keep Omorodiona in check.
Here are some reactions from fans on X.
The first person said: “Bayern Munich sold de Ligt to Manchester United for 50 million euros. Reminder.”
The second fans continue: “De Ligt is so bad that even his biggest hater couldn’t write a worse scenario for him.”
Another one express: “Martinez + de Ligt. Sounds like a curse. I need Maguire comeback”
The fourth comments: “Maguire deserves more playing time”
Former Man Utd midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes the Dutchman should drop Matthijs de Ligt, who struggled against Porto. He said:
“I think Harry Maguire will start against Aston Villa, and I think Erik ten Hag has to do that to save his job. De Ligt struggled really badly today. Samu Omorodion is a very explosive and powerful player, and he gave De Ligt a nightmare.
For Porto’s third goal, De Ligt failed to mark Samu, who is really good on the wing, effective in front of goal. That kid gave De Ligt a real nightmare today.
Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran are also such players, and if De Ligt continues to be used from the start, he is likely to repeat the mistakes. Ten Hag will have to make some important decisions.”
