Former England defender Roy Keane was unhappy with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance in Finland’s win over England, despite the defender scoring a stunning goal.
England eased to a home win over Finland in their UEFA Nations League matchday four. Coach Lee Carsley appeared to have improved his tactics since the defeat to Greece in the previous round, and the caretaker manager’s squad did not disappoint with three players leaving.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was the star who left the most impression when he was deployed at left-back, his preferred position, but still scored a stunning goal from a free-kick. Despite this, former England defender Roy Keane was unhappy with the 25-year-old’s defensive ability, which has been a constant issue in the Three Lions’ recent campaigns.
Speaking on ITV, Roy Keane said: “The technique was superb, you could see the way he set his foot, it was absolutely brilliant. The goalkeeper had no chance. I’m usually hard on goalkeepers, but I’ll let it slide this time. If you give Trent time, he’ll show great decision-making and passing quality, but I can’t believe how bad he is defending. Against better teams, he’ll be punished.”
Agreeing, Arsenal legend Ian Wright added: “I don’t think he’s shown enough defensive ability to make people say, ‘Yes, that’s the right position for him.’ But in terms of creativity, Lee Carsley wants as many creative players deep in the squad as possible. But I don’t think that’s going to happen too often.”
At Euro 2024, Arnold was often deployed in midfield by manager Gareth Southgate to make the most of his passing ability. However, the Liverpool star has often exposed his defensive weaknesses, and has been criticized many times after disastrous performances.
