Joshua Kimmich has left the door open to departing Bayern Munich next summer, with the Germany international revealing that he is ‘not ruling out any possibilities’.
The 29-year-old’s contract at Allianz Arena expires in June, prompting speculation over his future. Several clubs are reportedly interested in his services.
Several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Liverpool, and Manchester United, are reportedly interested in signing Kimmich. Barcelona has also been connected with the experienced midfielder.
According to a recent source, Bayern Munich is likely to sign Kimmich to a new contract after his great performance in the early stages of the 2024-25 season under Vincent Kompany.
However, the midfielder has reiterated that his future plans are still open, as he prepares to face Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Kimmich open the door to Bayern departure amid Barcelona talk
“In football, you can never make the mistake of ruling out possibilities. Now, to answer directly, I’m not thinking about it at this moment, but in football, you should never rule anything out,” Kimmich told reporters.
The German was also asked about coming up against Barcelona boss Hansi Flick on Wednesday, having played under the 59-year-old for both Bayern and Germany.
“It’s surely strange to play against him (Flick). It’s a special moment, it’s always special to play against Barca. In recent years, we’ve played against them quite a few times. It will be interesting to reunite with Hansi, and we’re excited about it,” he added.
“As I just said, playing against Barca is always something very special. I’ve been linked with Barca several times, but it’s not more special because of that. It’s special because it’s a very important club, with a very rich and successful tradition, and with a very good team.”
Kimmich is discreet about Bayern contract talks.
When pressed about a probable departure from Bayern, Kimmich said: “Everyone knows, what I discuss with the club is an internal matter, I don’t share it with everyone.”
This season, the German has made ten appearances for his Munich team, contributing three assists, and he has already played 400 games for his current club in all competitions, scoring 42 goals and registering 107 assists.
Earlier this year, it appeared like this would be his final season with Bayern, but the situation has seemingly altered with Kompany’s appointment as head coach.
Kimmich is still believed to be open to a new challenge at this stage of his career, but it remains to be seen whether a new deal can be reached with the German giants, who are vying for the Bundesliga crown from Bayer Leverkusen in 2024-25.
