Caoimhin Kelleher, the goalkeeper for Liverpool, had another impressive performance during Thursday’s 1-0 Nations League victory over Finland. The Irish goalie kept his team ahead 1-0 by stopping a late penalty attempt by Joel Pohjanpalo and then scurrying across goal to stop Robin Lod’s follow-up.
As he kept the ball firmly on the ground and the audience erupted in cheers following the save, his teammates gave him congrats.
Due to a goal from Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, Ireland managed to hold on for a 1-0 victory.
This means they are safe from automatic relegation from League B, but they will need to stay up through the play-offs. Kelleher, who has only given up five goals in his eight appearances filling in for Alisson at Liverpool this season, has achieved another victory.

He then pounced on the rebound, with the double save again proving his quality in goal
This season, Kelleher has been showing his worth at Liverpool, but as Alisson is signed through 2027, there does not appear to be much chance for him to hold the number one spot going forward.
Given that they paid £29 million to acquire Valencia and Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia this summer, it is uncertain what his future with Arne Slot’s team will hold.
He was loaned back to the Spanish team almost away, but given his desire to play regular football, it is doubtful that he will be able to compete for minutes at Anfield next season after such a significant investment.
Earlier this season, 25-year-old Kelleher stated, “I want to be playing every week and be that No. 1.”
It’s critical that I play every week going forward and secure the top spot. I have to prove to everyone that I am competent and capable of playing every single week.
“The most important thing is to be prepared when called upon, and I believe I have the quality to play well when needed, even if that means I won’t be playing a game for a few weeks.”
Kelleher’s contract expires in 2026, and given his stellar club and national accomplishments, a long list of suitors is expected.
After Finland’s victory, former Ireland striker Kevin Doyle praised his performance, telling RTE: “I think he is going to be the top one or two goalkeepers in the world in five or six years.”
He excels in all he does. Everything he owns is in the locker. He meets all the requirements. I think he will be the top man if he can get himself to play.
