After both Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappe missed penalties in Liverpool’s match against Real Madrid, Arne Slot thinks they demonstrated their “human” qualities.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Although Liverpool defeated Real Madrid 2-0 on Wednesday, Salah and Mbappe’s blunders from 12 yards out partly destroyed their respective mythologies. After Caoimhín Kelleher saved the Frenchman’s spot-kick, Salah missed his 12-yard attempt. Salah was saved by Cody Gakpo’s goal six minutes after Mbappe’s miss, which put Liverpool ahead 1-0.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Mbappe has struggled this season, scoring eight goals in 17 games for Real with two assists. Salah has been far more productive, scoring 12 goals in 19 games, and also registering 10 assists.”You think it is probably going to go in in both situations,” Slot told TNT Sports. They both missed, so they demonstrated their humanity to us today. Kelleher was exceptional for Mbappe. He has done remarkable for us, just like our other goalkeeper who has been remarkable too.”
“I was confident and thankfully went the right way again,” Kelleher said, confirming that he never questioned his ability to save Mbappe’s spot-shot from the penalty kick. It’s a significant outcome. It’s a huge outcome for us. Congratulations to the guys for putting on a show tonight, which was our goal.Getty Images Sport
