Karim Benzema might retire at season’s end, potentially making a surprise return to Real Madrid.
At 36, Benzema currently plays for Al-Ittihad but established himself as one of the world’s top strikers during a 14-year stint at Real Madrid from 2009 to 2023.
After a difficult debut season in the Middle East marred by off-field issues, the Frenchman has regained form this season.
Still, Al-Ittihad might not mind if he retires, as it would relieve them of a significant financial burden.
Reports suggest Benzema is planning ahead, with Real Madrid interested in hiring him as a club ambassador due to his strong ties to the Middle East.
The Spanish club views Benzema as an asset for marketing in the region, leveraging his influence to attract new opportunities.
At Real, he tallied 354 goals in 648 matches, capturing 25 trophies, including five Champions League titles.
He also earned the Ballon d’Or in 2022 after an extraordinary season featuring 44 goals in 46 games.
If Benzema rejoins Real as an ambassador, he’d follow in the footsteps of ex-players like Roberto Carlos, who currently represents the club in Asia and Oceania.
In the Saudi Pro League, Benzema has scored 10 goals in 10 matches under coach Laurent Blanc, just two goals shy of league leader Aleksandar Mitrovic and tied with Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, Benzema is reportedly weighing his future and may retire, according to Relevo.
Although his £86 million-a-year contract runs through 2026, Al-Ittihad expects him to fulfill it.
