Arsenal and Liverpool in race for in-form Champions League striker who knocked out Real Madrid

According to sources, Arsenal is set to compete with a number of teams, notably Newcastle United and Liverpool, for the services of Lille star Jonathan David.

Arsenal is actively considering signing the center-forward as they want to add a top goalscorer in 2025, according to Football Insider. However, the Gunners will need to overcome numerous other teams in order to get his signature.

The massive Serie A trio of AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus has also entered the David chase.

According to the source, there will be “huge clamour” to sign the 24-year-old because of his low cost.

David’s contract with Lille expires in the summer of 2020, so he can either sign a cut-price agreement in January or depart for free at that point.

It is believed that Lille would be enticed to sell this winter in order to prevent losing their star striker to a free transfer with a bid of just €25 million (£21 million / US$27.6 million).

Arsenal will have competition for David from more than just top Italian teams. Several Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation, including Newcastle and Liverpool.

The Italian media reported on Tuesday that Liverpool is leading the chase for the Canadian, having negotiated a substantial five-and-a-half-year contract worth €5 million (£80,000 per week).

Additionally, on September 25, it was revealed that Newcastle had begun negotiations to reach a pre-contract deal with David’s group.

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have both been suggested as potential suitors for David. Joshua Zirkzee was signed by Manchester United in the summer, but the team might still use a deadly attacker like David. Meanwhile, Tottenham is unlikely to pursue David after breaking their transfer record to acquire Dominic Solanke.

Given that David has had an excellent start to the new season, it seems sense that so many teams are keen to sign him.

After 12 games across all competitions, he has eight goals and two assists on his record thus far. That includes the winner, as Lille surprised Real Madrid on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

Just before halftime, David gave Lille the lead after striking the crossbar in the 25th minute. An Eduardo Camavinga hand ball had given the French side a spot-kick and David stepped up to send goalkeeper Andriy Lunin the wrong way.

David’s penalty proved to be the winning kick on an unforgettable evening for Lille, as Madrid had opportunities to tie the score but were unable to convert them.

David’s name will only grow from the game as he prepares to sign with one of the biggest football clubs in Europe next year.

Journalist Henry Winter has commended Arsenal for their “swagger” in other places and asserted that they play at home against the top teams in Europe.

Following the 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain, Winter hailed several of Arsenal’s top stars, including Declan Rice, William Saliba and Kai Havertz.

Emmanuel Petit, meanwhile, has stated that Mikel Arteta is better than legendary Arsenal predecessor Arsene Wenger in one aspect.

Even while Arsenal is winning, some of their less well-known players have suffered as a result of their wonderful team. As per TBR Football, defender Jakub Kiwior is ‘expected’ to leave the Emirates next year amid his struggles for game time.

With Kieran Tierney also up for sale, Arsenal are on the hunt for potential replacements at left-back. Miguel Gutierrez (Girona), Cristhian Mosquera (Valencia), Nathan Zeze (Nantes) and Vitor Reis (Palmeiras) are the players on Edu’s radar.

More than anyone, who needs Jonathan David?
