Trent Alexander-Arnold took to social media to celebrate Liverpool’s impressive 6-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur in north London.

Although the 26-year-old didn’t score, he played a key role in assisting Luis Diaz’s first goal with a brilliant cross. Diaz marked the moment with a playful gesture, pretending to polish Alexander-Arnold’s boots during their celebration. On X (formerly Twitter), Alexander-Arnold shared a picture of the moment with the caption “Christmas number 1.”

This references Liverpool’s position at the top of the Premier League table as the holiday season begins. Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville praised Alexander-Arnold’s performance, saying, “The pass is brilliant.”

“To get the ball into that space was literally amazing. There are very few players I’ve seen in Premier League history that can land it on a sixpence like that with that accuracy. It’s absolutely perfect.”

Liverpool now sits four points ahead of Chelsea in second place, which could only manage a draw against Everton at Goodison Park. This means that if Liverpool triumphs over local rivals Everton on February 11, they could extend their lead to seven points, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The Merseyside Derby had previously been postponed due to Storm Darragh earlier this month. There’s uncertainty hanging over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s stay at Liverpool as he approaches the twilight of his current contract. Real Madrid has their eyes set on swooping in for a potential pre-agreement come the New Year.

As things stand, the prolific defender could start negotiations with international clubs in the upcoming month. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher weighed in on the matter during his stint on Sky Sports, arguing that the right-back ought to commit to a new deal as a strategic move: “If I was advising Trent, a lot of it is to do with the free transfer,” Carragher explained.

“It is that feeling that you are leaving us for nothing, where is our money to replace you? I would say, sign a contract, have a decent buyout clause that’s not ridiculous and if Real Madrid wanted to buy you in 12 months’ time…”
