Scroll Down to relive the standout moments from a foggy Anfield as Liverpool delivered a Boxing Day masterclass against Leicester City!
Arne Slot’s vision for Liverpool is sharper than ever, even if the Anfield fog briefly clouded the night.
A Premier League title in his debut season as Liverpool manager is now within touching distance, marking a remarkable journey under his leadership.
Curtis Jones put Liverpool in control soon after half-time.The midfielder made no mistake and survived a long VAR check.
With a seven-point lead at the top of the table and a game in hand over second-placed Chelsea, Liverpool’s title ambitions are no longer just a distant dream.
Despite conceding early to Jordan Ayew’s shock goal, Arne Slot’s men calmly dismantled the spirited but ultimately fruitless challenge from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.
Slot’s debut season is gathering unstoppable momentum, driven by an unbeaten streak of 22 matches since the lone defeat to Nottingham Forest on September 14.
Victory is now within reach for Slot, who has risen to the challenge of succeeding Jurgen Klopp—defying doubts about the monumental void left by the German legend.
All Arne Slot and his players—who also sit comfortably atop their Champions League group—need to do is stay composed, keep believing, and the Premier League title will surely be theirs.
However, their start against Leicester was far from steady, as Jordan Ayew stunned Anfield with an early opener.
Slot may quietly worry that his ambitions to solidify Liverpool’s defense remain a work in progress. Yet, in attack, this team is an unstoppable force, scoring two or more goals in 13 of their last 14 matches. Liverpool’s offensive prowess continues to mask any defensive frailties, driving them closer to glory.
Liverpool’s attacking dominance has been on full display, as they’ve now overtaken Tottenham to become the Premier League’s top scorers this season.
There was a moment of uncertainty before the match, with the thick fog raising concerns that the game might be postponed. Even just ten minutes before kick-off, Anfield was still shrouded in a heavy mist, adding an eerie atmosphere to the Boxing Day clash.
Mavididi’s calmness under pressure paid off when he squared the ball to Ayew, who produced a piece of magic. As Andy Robertson closed him down, Ayew executed a beautiful pirouette, creating space for himself before delivering a perfect low shot past Alisson, finding the bottom corner and giving Leicester a shocking 1-0 lead.
But despite the early setback, Liverpool continued their relentless push forward. Gakpo’s shot was unlucky to be blocked, and Salah’s deflected effort skimmed just over the bar. In the 25th minute, Robertson’s header from Mac Allister’s chip struck the same spot where Salah’s shot had narrowly missed, further increasing the pressure on Leicester’s defense.
Eventually, the Foxes’ luck ran out. Gakpo, determined to make his mark, picked up the ball on the left wing, cut inside, and unleashed a powerful curling shot with his right foot. Stolarczyk had no chance as it soared into the top left corner, marking a moment of sheer class from the Dutch forward and leveling the game at 1-1.
Just seconds before first-half injury time, Gakpo’s brilliant equalizer set the stage for a thrilling second half. And four minutes after the break, Liverpool were celebrating again, this time with a goal that showcased their high-class attacking play. Salah’s perfectly timed pass across the box found Curtis Jones, who calmly flicked the ball over the line to give Liverpool the lead. The goal, which marked Jones’ 100th Premier League appearance, was initially subject to a VAR check for offside, but it was clear that the finish was a thing of beauty.
Leicester, despite the setback, weren’t done yet. A scare for Liverpool came in the 60th minute when Patson Daka missed a golden opportunity. After receiving a brilliant pass from Mavididi, Daka mis-hit his shot from 12 yards out, much to the relief of Alisson.
Taking the cue, Liverpool ramped up their attacking intensity. Darwin Nunez, starting in place of the rested Diogo Jota, finally began to find his rhythm. He connected with a cross from Salah, but his strike was superbly blocked by Stolarczyk, who produced a brilliant save.
Gakpo thought he had scored his second goal, smashing a shot into the net, but a lengthy VAR review ruled out the goal for a very marginal offside by Nunez in the build-up.
Yet the third was always going to come and almost always when a killer blow is required, it once more came from Salah.
He gathered the ball, moved forward in that usual quick fashion of his, then when Van Nistelrooy’s defence thought they were sorted to blight the danger, he simply used Victor Kristiansen as a wall to block his dart inside before curling another exquisite shot beyond a goalkeeper.
