Arsenal moved up to second in the Premier League table as Kai Havertz’s first-half strike gave the Gunners a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ipswich Town in the 18th round of the Premier League and extended their unbeaten run to 14 games at home this season (W11 D3).

In the first meeting between the two sides since 2002, Arsenal dominated from the start. Jurrien Timber gave the visitors their first warning with a low shot that was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Arijanet Muric. The Gunners continued to press and were rewarded in the 23rd minute when Leandro Trossard set up Kai Havertz to score from close range, marking the German’s 12th goal of the season.

Fuelled by momentum, Arsenal pressed for a second goal. Gabriel Jesus, in his third consecutive appearance since December 2023, had a shot on target that was ruled out for offside. This was Arsenal’s best chance to extend their lead in the first half, as the Ipswich defence held firm and conceded just one goal before the break.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with Arsenal continuing to miss chances to double their lead. Gabriel headed wide from just five yards out. Arsenal continued to press in the final 20 minutes, but Muric made excellent saves from Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino.

Despite winning two of their last three away games, Ipswich were unable to make a difference against Arsenal. The hosts eased through the final stages to claim three vital points without the services of Bukayo Saka. The win extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run against newly promoted sides to 42 games (W37 D5), while Ipswich suffered their fifth Premier League defeat in their last six games.

Arsenal have moved up to second place on 36 points, six points behind leaders Liverpool, but having played a game more. Ipswich have 12 points and the road to relegation remains difficult for Kieran McKenna’s side as they sit 19th, three points from safety.
