Manchester United are closing in on signing highly-rated defender Diego Leon, with the 17-year-old set to undergo a medical at Carrington ahead of finalizing his transfer.

The Paraguayan left-back, who has impressed with Cerro Porteño in the domestic league, will join United on a pre-contract agreement for a reported £6 million fee. While Leon won’t officially become a part of the squad until the summer, his visit to Manchester includes a medical, meeting key staff members, and a tour of United’s facilities.

Technical director Jason Wilcox has been instrumental in securing the deal, reflecting United’s growing focus on scouting young talent in South America.

Leon plays naturally at left-back, a position that has troubled United recently due to persistent injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. While the club is expected to sign a senior left-back this summer, Leon will be given time to develop and adapt to English football.

A similar pathway is being followed by Sekou Kone, an 18-year-old forward signed last year from Guidars FC in Mali. Kone has only made one start for the Under-21s due to injury and is still acclimating to the intensity of the game in England.

Both Leon and Kone are regarded as promising prospects for Manchester United’s future first team.
