Despite starting 11 of his 20 games in all competitions, Grealish has struggled for Guardiola’s team this season, with 1036 minutes of play, one goal, and four assists.

The winger scored his first goal in more than a year earlier in January, a penalty kick in City’s 8-0 FA Cup victory against League Two Salford.

Grealish was a key player when City won the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League two seasons ago, and Guardiola believes he will work with him to get him back to that level of performance.

“I played Savinho [against West Ham] because he is in better shape and everything,” the City manager retorted.

“Do I want the Treble-winning Jack? Yes, I do want that, but I make an effort to be truthful with myself about that.

“They must engage in combat. You could argue that it’s unjust.

“Ok, if you think that, then it’s fine, but you have to prove [to me], ‘ok, I’m going to fight with Savinho, to deserve to play in that position’, every single day, every single week and every single month.”
