Rice opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, latching onto a Kai Havertz pass and firing into the net.

However, as he prepared to take corners near the Zagreb supporters, sections of the visiting fans hurled plastic cups in his direction, forcing him to take cover.

Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard was also targeted by objects when he joined Rice near the corner flag during the first half.

The behavior of the Zagreb fans is expected to draw disciplinary action from UEFA, European football’s governing body.

Arsenal headed into the match seeking to boost their chances of earning an automatic qualifying berth in the last-16 of the competition.

Mikel Arteta’s side had earned 13 points from their opening six matches in the new-look league phase of the competition.

The results saw the Gunners occupy a top eight spot in the league, which would be enough for direct entry through to the next stage of the competition.

Victory over the Croatian champions would help Arsenal avoid dropping into the play-off positions.

Zagreb are outside the play-off positions at this stage, but still could secure a spot with positive results in their remaining fixtures.
