After a controversial Harry Maguire winner, Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy swore at the referees and was upset that Manchester United had won the game in “offside time” instead of “Fergie time.”
Up until the 93rd minute, when Maguire found himself unmarked at the back post to head in Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick, the game appeared to be headed to extra time. This move guaranteed United a spot in the FA Cup’s fifth round.
However, it was evident from replays that Maguire scored from an offside position. On the Leicester City bench, there were also several complaints regarding the free-kick’s first award.
Since VAR wasn’t used until the FA Cup’s fifth round, the decision was made by the human eye, and Van Nistelrooy’s Foxes lost in the most excruciating way possible.
“We lose in offside time, not in Fergie time,” a displeased Van Nistelrooy declared.
It’s obvious that a blunder decided the game. There was no need for this.
This was half a meter, which was exactly in line with what you have [when] it’s a couple centimeters or a couple of inches.
We were entitled to extra time, extra time combat, and possibly penalties.
“We find it difficult to accept decisions like these at our level.”
On television, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane expressed his disbelief at the winning goal and criticized the referees as well.
“Maguire’s offside must be seen by the linesman,” Keane stated.
Tonight, United was released from prison. The actual performance was far below satisfactory.
Ruben Amorim, Van Nistelrooy’s opponent, could feel sorry for the Leicester manager for the unfairness of the cup elimination.
However, Amorim thought that they needed a little luck, however they could get it, after going through a challenging period of his own.
We require a lot of things [that are] not related to luck; rather, they are related to the caliber of the work; we must enhance every aspect of the game; my work with them must be much better; yet, occasionally, a little bit of luck is necessary, and today we had it.
It’s not luck because, according to VAR, it wasn’t a goal, and I believe that’s crucial because it’s fair.
It’s quite difficult to drop a single game in the last minute with an offside play, but sometimes we deserve a little bit of luck.’
