Manchester United reportedly dispatched scouts to Sporting Lisbon to look at Geovany Quenda in preparation for a potential summer deal for the wonderkid.
Ever since Ruben Amorim left Sporting to join the Red Devils, the highly regarded 17-year-old has been associated with the team.
Amorim has been committed to making his mark ever since he took over, and Quenda’s name has been around the club for a while.
There hasn’t been any formal confirmation, but earlier sources said that United and the Portuguese squad had agreed to pay £50 million to acquire Quenda.
According to Record, United dispatched scouts to observe Quenda and attended Sporting’s game against Porto on Friday as a winger.
According to the report, the Red Devils will continue to assess Quenda when they play Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
After spending some time at rivals Benfica’s youth program, Quenda joined Sporting in 2019 at the age of 13.
At the age of 16, Quenda became the youngest player to ever play for Sporting’s reserve team after Amorim immediately recognized his skill.
Amorim was raving about Quenda’s performance at right wing-back when he was brought to Sporting’s first squad at the start of the current campaign after making an impression in a preseason friendly.
“He’s very talented, very mature, and understands the game like an adult,” Amorim said in a July interview with Sporting TV.
“We have a player there, and I think he had a great game, but he still has a lot to work on.”
Born in Guinea-Bissaun, Quenda has represented Portugal on the international scene at the U17 and U21 levels.
Although he did not feature in either of the Nations League games against Croatia and Scotland in August, Quenda was given his first senior call-up by Portugal manager Roberto Martinez.
United now sits in 13th place in the standings following a difficult beginning to Amorim’s time at the club.
