Arsenal should have pursued a Liverpool star during the January transfer window, according to a former Reds player.

Gunners fans were eager for an attacking signing, but the window closed without new additions, despite a late attempt to acquire Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

Liverpool legend Didi Hamann has surprisingly suggested that one of their players would have been an ideal fit for Mikel Arteta’s squad. That player is Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez, who has divided opinions since his club-record £85 million transfer from Benfica in 2022.

“I believe the team is well-equipped, but the absence of a center-forward is clearly a hindrance to their chances,” Hamann stated on Prime Casino. “I think Darwin Nunez would be a great asset for Arsenal. If you have someone up front who can bully defenders and draw their attention, he consistently attracts two or three defenders.”

Hamann emphasized that Nunez’s physicality and speed could significantly change dynamics on the field. “His presence is impactful. If you have a player with physicality and pace up top, it transforms the game.”

He noted that while Arsenal finds space well, having a player like Nunez would ease the burden on talents like Saka, Martinelli, and Odegaard. “Quick players stretch defenses, and they simply don’t have that right now.”

Dietmar Hamann says Nunez is the type of player that this Arsenal team currently needs

Hamann added, “Nunez would be a fantastic addition to the squad, but it’s too late for that now, and they need to work with what they have.”

Nunez has had an underwhelming campaign and there is talk of him leaving this summer

Nunez had a forgettable night as Liverpool dropped more points in the title race, with Arne Slot’s team drawing 2-2 at Aston Villa, where Nunez missed a crucial opportunity to score a third goal in the second half.
