After being unnecessarily sent off during Sunday’s victory away at Getafe, Real Betis loanee Antony will miss next weekend’s La Liga match against Real Madrid.
After coming to Spain on loan from Manchester United at the end of January, Antony had already settled in rather nicely.
Before his midterm departure, the 24-year-old had not started a single Premier League match for United this season.
However, he started for Betis for the sixth consecutive game on Sunday’s trip to Getafe. Antony has contributed three goals and two assists in the six appearances.
At Estadio Coliseum, he assisted Isco in scoring the first goal, but his night ended badly as he was sent off in the 90th minute of his team’s 2-1 victory.
In the third minute of extra time, Antony’s team regained possession thanks to his relentless pressing. After that, he attempted to dribble the ball down the right wing but was struck hard, failing to beat Juan Iglesias.
After the ball had gone, Antony made a reckless lunge that sent Iglesias tumbling to the ground after he had played a pass back to his goalkeeper.
Antony tried to wave a finger at the referee to prove his innocence right away, but Javier Alberola Rojas quickly took the red card out of his back pocket and held it up over the Brazilian.
The Premier Sports announcer who was covering the game called the tackle a “heads gone moment” and said it was “reckless” and “completely unnecessary.”
Since being sent off in the final minute of Ajax’s 3-2 victory over Feyenoord in the Netherlands in March 2022, this was Antony’s first red card.
With their victory on Sunday, Betis rose to seventh place in La Liga.
