Tyrell Malacia of Manchester United had a memorable evening as Arsenal crushed PSV Eindhoven, their loan team, 7-1 in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match.
After 18 minutes, Jurrien Timber began the scoring, and within 30 minutes, Mikel Merino and Ethan Nwaneri, both 17 years old, increased Arsenal’s lead.
Noa Lang’s penalty-spot goal offered PSV a glimmer of hope, but their hopes were short-lived as Martin Odegaard scored less than a minute after the restart, and Leandro Trossard added a fifth seconds later.
Then, just before Riccardo Calafiori finished the thrashing, Odegaard grabbed his brace.
Malacia was included in PSV manager Peter Bosz’s starting lineup, which also included Ryan Flamingo and Olivier Boscagli at center back and Richard Ledezma on the opposing wing.
Malacia remained on the field for the whole game, touching the ball 58 times and completing 23 of his 33 passes to find his teammates. These three passes were crucial.
The left-back contributed as many tackles and made two clearances. In addition, he made three interceptions.
He only won three of the nine duels he participated in; he lost six of them. Malacia lost possession 14 times and committed four fouls.
Two of the three crosses the 25-year-old went for were successful. Only once did he find his targeted target after pinging six long balls.
Malacia attempted one shot but was unable to put David Raya to the test.
It’s safe to assume that Arsenal is virtually certain of a quarterfinal berth, while Malacia and PSV are essentially eliminated from the League barring an extraordinary collapse.
PSV will surely want to return to winning ways when they play SC Heerenveen on Saturday.
