After being called up to the Brazilian national team for the first time in nearly 18 months, Neymar wrote a message to his followers on Instagram on Thursday.
Since suffering a major knee injury during their October 2023 encounter against Uruguay, the 33-year-old has not played for his nation.
Only a few weeks after making the lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, he had another injury setback and played just seven games for Al-Hilal.
But after rejoining his childhood team, Santos, in January, he has scored six goals in seven games, earning a spot in Brazil’s roster for Thursday’s World Cup qualifying matches.
Neymar posted a picture of himself on Instagram while listening to national team manager Dorival Junior’s news conference, and he watched the squad announcement live.
‘Glad to be back!’ Neymar wrote with the picture.
Since making his debut in 2010 at the age of 18, the 128-cap international has served as Brazil’s lucky charm.
However, after a protracted absence, Dorival Junior advised supporters and the media not to place undue pressure on Neymar upon his return.
“It is unnecessary to discuss what Neymar stands for,” he stated. “We recognize and comprehend that he is currently regaining his form.” However, we think that his skills and attributes put him in a position to handle any challenge on the field.
He is a footballer whose teammates from Brazil have openly stated what he means to the team.
We were anticipating his comeback, and this is the first chance we’ve had to have him [since he’s recovered from his injury]. When he gets back, I hope he’s thrilled.
“Let’s not set high expectations or put all the blame on his return; instead, let’s give him the confidence he needs to grow to the best of his abilities.”
Brazil still has work to do to guarantee their spot in the competition next year, as they are now fifth in their World Cup qualifying group.
Later this month, they are scheduled to play Argentina, the current world champions, and Colombia.
