Scott McTominay claims he was ‘misjudged’ at Man United before moving to Napoli – and explains why coaches were WRONG not to play him in his preferred position!

Scott McTominay, a former Manchester United player who found his greatest form since joining Napoli in the summer, has said he was “misprofiled” at Old Trafford.

McTominay, who joined Manchester United in 2017 after progressing through the development levels, ended his seven-year tenure at Old Trafford last summer when he paid £26 million to join Napoli.

Since joining Antonio Conte at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, the Scotsman has been outstanding, contributing 10 goals from midfield in his 26 Serie A games thus far.

With nine games remaining and Napoli trailing league leaders Inter Milan by just three points, McTominay may possibly complete his first season in Italy with the Serie A championship in his grasp.

McTominay, who made more than 250 appearances while at Manchester United, claimed in an interview with The Athletic this week that his managers should have done a better job of deploying him and accused them of “misprofiling” him.

Rather than being deployed in the box-to-box role that has brought him success at Napoli, McTominay was predominantly used as a defensive midfielder at Manchester United

During his time at Manchester United, the Scottish star was primarily utilized as a defensive midfielder, or No 6, and was occasionally asked to step in at center-back instead of being used in the box-to-box role that has helped him succeed at Napoli.

“I was really misprofiled in my position when I joined the first team,” McTominay remarked.

None of the coaches were at fault. Getting into the box, scoring goals, and being a menace in there have always been my strong points. However, I was utilized as a center-back or a No. 6, which isn’t really my style.

The 6′ 4″ midfielder, who rose through the ranks under Jose Mourinho, was coached by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, and Erik ten Hag before departing the team just before Ruben Amorim took over.

McTominay had an incredible scoring run for Scotland on the international scene before to joining Napoli, demonstrating his potential when used regularly farther forward.

He has scored seven goals in 28 games for Napoli this season and has 11 goals overall in 58 appearances for his nation.

“When you’re playing for Manchester United and you’re twenty, you can’t knock on the manager’s door and say that you expect to be playing at No 8 ahead of Paul Pogba,” McTominay continued, explaining why his Manchester United coaches had “misprofiled” him. It isn’t feasible. You must be aware of your role and follow instructions.

The midfielder has had goal-scoring success in a more advanced role for Scotland as well

I started to get into the box a little more in the past few seasons in an effort to score more goals, and last season was my best.

They would consistently sign someone who wasn’t exactly what folks had anticipated.

I had the mindset that I was always available, prepared to go and seize my chance. I always wanted to demonstrate my value and my ability to play all the games. I’m not affected by that kind of thing. The only thing you can control is what you do.

In Serie A, McTominay will play high-flying Bologna on Monday before facing Empoli, Monza, Torino, and Lecce.

Rivals for the Serie A title, Inter Milan, will play Parma this weekend before facing Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday.

After winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup while he was at Old Trafford, McTominay would win his first domestic championship if Conte’s team wins the Serie A race.
