Marseille fans demand Mason Greenwood ‘move more’ with giant banner unfurled before game – and former Man United star responds by scoring TWO goals in 5-1 win

Prior to their crushing 5-1 victory over Montpellier on Saturday, Marseille supporters expressed their annoyance with Mason Greenwood.

Marseille fans held up a banner aimed at Mason Greenwood which read: 'Greenwood, Henrique, get moving!!!'

The former Manchester United player’s mentality has been called into question by a number of recent, devastating revelations.

Greenwood was just added back to the starting lineup after being benched by manager Roberto De Zerbi, who reportedly wasn’t happy with his work output, according to French publications.

A sign was unfurled near the Orange Velodrome’s north curve prior to Saturday’s match, and Marseille supporters urged Greenwood to put in more work.

The former Man United forward responded to the criticism by scoring a brace in the game

‘Greenwood, Henrique, get moving!!!’ was the banner’s message, which was also directed at Greenwood’s teammate the same name.

Greenwood gave Marseille an early lead by converting a penalty kick on eight minutes, the greatest way he could respond to the criticism.

Then, in the 67th minute, the 23-year-old scored his second goal, bringing his season total in Ligue 1 to 18. Ousmane Dembele of PSG has accomplished more (21).

Helped by Greenwood's two goals, Marseille went on to thrash Montpellier 5-1 on Saturday

With the win, Marseille maintained their momentum in their attempt to earn a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season and overtook Monaco in second position.

But with five games remaining, PSG is looking to become unbeatable this season after winning the title in matchweek 28. Ligue 1 has long since been decided.

When discussing Greenwood’s work rate last month, De Zerbi asserted that the forward is not used to the heavy workload he has had this season.

Greenwood ‘has the qualities’ to become one of the greats of Marseille, according to De Zerbi, who went one step further earlier this month.

He remarked, “Greenwood is a natural talent.” “His parents deserve all the praise.” And my purpose is to assist him in becoming more whole. I’m happy to offer him a hug or a supportive word when he needs it. And since it’s my responsibility, I must also encourage him to provide more when necessary.

“I would especially like to help him be remembered as one of the greatest players to have played here at the Velodrome, in this stadium and by these supporters,” he continued.

Although there have been many outstanding athletes here, I believe Greenwood possesses the traits necessary to be recognized in that manner. And I’m working to advance him.

After being arrested in January 2022 and charged with attempted rape, violence, and controlling and coercive behavior, Greenwood quit United last summer.

‘Withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light’ led the Crown Prosecution Service to dismiss charges against Greenwood. Greenwood has consistently refuted the accusations.

Last season, Greenwood rekindled his career while on loan with Getafe in Spain, where he scored ten goals and provided six assists.

When he was first connected to Marseille, his relocation to France caused a backlash from angry supporters, who started a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign.

Since then, he has formally asked to join Steve McClaren’s Jamaica team instead of England, for whom he made one appearance.
