The Premier League has disclosed why Tyler Adams’ hit on Alejandro Garnacho during Bournemouth’s match against Manchester United did not result in a red card.
In the 21st minute of Sunday afternoon’s match at Vitality Stadium, Adams seemed to leap into the challenge on Garnacho with two feet and caught the Argentina star.
The American was given a yellow card by referee Peter Bankes, but VAR John Brooks reviewed the event and did not send the official to the monitor.
To the annoyance of the Man United bench and supporters, Brooks deemed the yellow card to be an adequate penalty.
“The referee’s call of yellow card for the challenge by Adams on Garnacho was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge deemed reckless and not serious foul play,” the Premier League match center noted in a post on X.
Minutes later, Antoine Semenyo took the Cherries a 1-0 lead, adding to United’s suffering.
At halftime, Sky Sports commentator Jamie Redknapp stated that he ‘doesn’t want to see a red card’ for such challenges and that the tackle was ‘full-blooded’. O
n social media, however, a handful of supporters believed the American ought to have been sent packing.
“Why doesn’t Garnacho have a red?” ‘If one of our players merely breathed like that on a Bournemouth player, it’s a straight red and a three-match ban,’ one fan said on X.
“It is the same every week.”
“What are these officials on?” said another. The Bournemouth player is out of control, goes off the floor, and goes in two-footed; he is given a 100% red card.
However, following a VAR review, Evanilson was sent off for a high challenge later in the game.
It exacerbated United’s already challenging season, which has seen them finish in the bottom half of the Premier League standings following a challenging campaign under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim.
Even though they selected a formidable team to play Bournemouth, they still have the Europa League to contend with.
