HARRY MAGUIRE created the opening goal for Manchester United against Athletic Bilbao by channeling his inner Lamine Yamal.
Despite being on the right wing in Spain, the center-back defied his bulky physique.
And he created his own magical moment, just like Yamal had done twenty-four hours before.
Maguire showed superb agility and deceived his dejected marker by jinxing inside and out, inside and back out again.
The £85 million player, who used a substitute striker to score a thrilling goal in the quarterfinal, then delivered an inch-perfect cross to justify his high price tag.
The impasse in northern Spain was broken when Manuel Ugarte flicked it on and Casemiro had a free header at the back post.
Darren Fletcher, a TNT Sports analyst, made a joke about Maguire having been observing Yamal, a 17-year-old Barcelona phenom, tear up Inter Milan’s defense yesterday.
“Maguire isn’t the most conventional of right-wingers, but he’s performed well there,” Fletcher remarked.
“He’s actually going to try again. If you can beat him twice, why not?
“It’s a fantastic cross, a fantastic opportunity, and Manchester United wins 1-0.
“Casemiro does an excellent job finishing it, but what about Harry Maguire’s wrangling?
“He’s been watching Lamine Yamal last night.”
Rio Ferdinand quipped that Robbie Savage would have to “renegotiate his contract as an attacking player” after the “magnificent play” since he was losing his voice.
During the festivities, Maguire was unable to conceal his grin of glee.
And in response to the incredible feat of talent from their unusual wide player, United supporters poured forth insightful remarks on social media.
One said: “Who is Yamal? Who is Nico? Harry Maguire, sir.
“Harry Maguire is our best CB, RWB, and ST,” someone else wrote. “What a player!”
Another stated, “Harry Maguire really watched Lamine Yamal last night and said, ‘Watch this.'”
“Lamine Yamal has posters of Harry Maguire on his walls…” writes the fourth.
“Lamine Yamal wakes up every single day thinking about how he can be more like Harry Maguire,” said a fifth commenter. “Icon.”
The last user’s response was, “Harry Maguire is better than Lamine Yamal.”
Despite bringing back Maroan Sannadi as the final defender, Maguire managed to go from hero to zero as United lead by three goals and were up by one man at the break.
Shortly after, Maguire was substituted out as United managed to hold on for a 3-0 victory.
Ruben Amorim may have been holding off on using his best attacking player until the second leg and the probable final back at the San Mames on May 21.
