Rasmus Hojlund had to put up with a strange situation during Friday night’s Manchester United vs. Chelsea match.
Days before United’s Europa League final matchup with Tottenham, Hojlund began the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.
But Hojlund’s game was cut short minutes into the second half, with the score tied at zero.
On his right wrist, the striker was spotted sporting what looked to be a smart watch.
Referee Chris Kavanagh became aware of this, and Hojlund was then informed to remove the device.
After taking off the watch, Hojlund hurried to United’s dugout and gave it to a staff member.
Hojlund was in a state of hysteria as he made his way over because of his awful mistake at Stamford Bridge.
Although it was somewhat disguised by a bandage, the Danish striker was spotted sporting the accessory throughout the first half.
It was revealed during the game’s live broadcast on Sky Sports that Hojlund had been moved to the touchline due to his jewelry.
Additionally, many expressed their confusion on social media after the occurrence left them perplexed.
“Hojlund really came on the pitch with an Apple Watch,” one person commented.
‘Bruv just wants to get his steps in,’ said another, while a second admirer made a joke: ’10k badge on Garmin this weekend.’
Others, meanwhile, made fun of the Dane’s recent poor play by stating: “Hojlund is more concerned with meeting his daily fitness objectives on his watch than with scoring goals.”
After another fan remarked, “He’s counting his steps because he knows he won’t score,” another user joked, “Please tell me why Hojlund was wearing a watch on the football field.”
Hojlund’s night took a turn for the worst in the 71st minute when Marc Cucurella headed home from a wonderful cross from Reece James, scoring what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
Despite their best efforts, United was unable to respond, as Ruben Amorim’s team lost for the 18th time this season.
Even though Hojlund scored a thrilling late equalizer against Bournemouth last month, the 22-year-old has not been able to make an influence on the game.
He has only scored four goals in 31 Premier League games this season, and this matchup with Chelsea is his 27th Premier League game without a goal.
Before Amorim’s team plays Aston Villa at home on Sunday to wrap out the season, Hojlund and United will play again on Wednesday night when they play Tottenham in the Europa League final.
