Fans criticized Andre Onana on social media after he made a crucial mistake that allowed Tottenham to defeat Manchester United in their Europa League final.
Since joining the Red Devils in the summer of 2023 under then-manager Erik ten Hag, the goalie has drawn criticism for his occasionally inconsistent ball control.
There was no greater backdrop for the Man United No. 1’s gaffe on Wednesday night, though, as Man United supporters watched in despair as Pape Matar Sarr’s whipped cross was horribly diverted by Luke Shaw and assisted by Onana.
When Spurs took the lead in the 42nd minute, fans on social media were eager to blame the goalie alone. Few people held back as they expressed their initial opinions.
One fan bemoaned, “Andre Onana is so so poor,” while another added, “Andre Onana is the worst goalkeeper in football history.”
“That is a howler.”
A third said, “Another day, another Onana mistake.”
One commenter said, “I’m not exaggerating when I say that Onana may be the worst keeper I’ve seen at the top level.”
‘Onana doesn’t have strong hands?’ asked another. He need to be using a powerful hand to drag that ball on the line. Gianluigi, the goalie for Paris Saint-Germain, will save that for Donnarumma.
However, several held back their rage toward Shaw because of his involvement in the objective.
One wrote, “Shaw had to be involved, of course, because he’s been awful.”
“After tonight, Shaw and Onana will never be able to play for Manchester United again.”
Prior to Man United’s April European match against Lyon, former star Nemanja Matic called Onana “one of the worst keepers” in the team’s history.
The Cameroon international has the second-lowest save % and the worst clean-sheet percentage of any United goalkeeper with more than 900 minutes played since the 2003–04 campaign, according to Opta.
Tottenham defeated their Premier League opponents for the fourth time this season to win the Europa League, and the goal turned out to be the only one of the game.
